VCD – Character Design & Illustration

rachel.mackinnon@auarts.ca

Hello! I am a designer, illustrator, printmaker, and recent graduate from the Alberta University of the Arts. My work ranges from comics to colourful silkscreens and book designs. I see myself as a hybrid designer who brings illustrative elements into modern design, and I like to add fun and whimsy into my practice!

You can also see my work for sale at AUArts brand new graduating artists Show and Sale and showandsale.ca now until May 30th.

Adjustment Disorder

This small comic is a piece I created for the AUArts Student Association's Hear/d residency, an artists residency focusing on themes about mental health and well being.

When I first started this work, all I knew was I wanted to talk about queer identity in relation to appearance. What emerged was a kind of self-conversation that skips and turns and represents my inner dialogue. I’ve struggled with identity since I could recognize myself in the mirror, and putting image and text in boxes helped process the compartmentalized issues that have been so long ignored.
