Print Media

I explore the interplay of the slow as a derivative of our increased speed of life in contemporary urban society through screen print and mixed media. I use text and literary devices such as irony and repetition primarily within my body of work. I use authoritative/imperative statements that suggests slowness while being contrasted and conflicted by phrases that promote speed and/or productivity to show opposing forces existing in tandem. Repetition and the overlap of text are used to create a sense of overload, challenge legibility, and act as an accumulation of language to engage attention and affect the way the works are read and processed. These elements work together to encourage us to consider our sense of place/time in relation to our surroundings and experiences by acknowledging this speed.

DO NOTHING.

These works look at the artificiality of this fictional space in relation to the act(s) of slowness. The initial screen print inspired this concept.

SLOW OBSERVATION. A FOCUSED STUDY.

These works consists of earlier ideas of all knowledge stemming from observation and slow looking as a form of "listening" at the beginning of my practice as I was developing it. I used charcoal and erasure to create these works. These pieces focus on a specific and localized space of a home that my family owned on the verge of renovation. The previous tenants no longer lived there and I personally did not know them. Photos provided by Andy Rubio.
