Sculpture

My current work explores topics of ecology, interdependent relationships, and permaculture through material interactions exploring a language between various technologies, industrial materials, and living organisms. I create interactive experiences that explore ways of considering a future of harmony between the human-made and the natural world, while seeking ways for these to be positive and sustainable. I am interested in how humans and nature are interdependent through networks of biodiversity, how plants and the natural environment help us connect with ourselves and each other.

In my current work I use reclaimed, and found materials, establishing installations where interactivity engenders awareness and empathy towards expansive ecologies. My work highlight’s themes of resiliency and intelligence of nature. I seek to provoke questions and conversations, through bridging concepts between science and art as my research considers non-empirical approaches to understand our relationship with nature.

Through my work and its collaborative, interactive elements, I hope to engender an awareness of our ecosystem and our participatory role in is health and future. In contrast to Bio art, which prioritizes empirical science, my methodology of Eco art seeks to establish a caring and human dialogue in relation to our natural environment.

'Eavesdropping' 2024 My 2024 work ‘Eavesdropping’ included an uncommon house plant (philodendron cordatum) surrounded by soil in the middle of the gallery floor. Wires connected to the plant translated its bioelectricity to a synthesizer and into sound, creating an environment where viewers were encouraged to consider the possibility of plants communicating.
'Hive' 2023 ‘Hive’ consisting of Native Alberta wildflower seeds encased in a clay pod, where I invited viewers to take one to plant it outside the gallery space. With a materials list that included “time” and “care”, I seek to establish a community with individuals, that in planting the seed pods they are helping restore our bee population.
'Rebuild' 2050 ‘Rebuild 2050’ is a shelter made of landfill materials, trash picked up off road sides, and collected from dumpsters, that was located in a back alley between a parkade and buildings. This shelter dated for 2050 calls to the current use of resources while considering a need for resourcefulness and built with community members who brought their own knowledge to the construction of it.
'Unplugged' 2023 ‘Unplugged’ 2023 is an installation with reclaimed domestic furniture. On the couch sits a Dracaena trifasciata (also known as a snake plant), and in the materials list it requests 'a willing companion' to join the plant on the couch. This piece is an invitation to unplug from digital media and take time to reconnect with nature.
'Hope' 2021 'Hope' 2021 is a cinderblock found at construction site filled with soil and thyme seeds, encased in concrete situated on a plinth. The piece asks for empathy by requesting a ‘sunny home’ through a didactic that encourages the viewer to relocate the piece from the gallery in order to promote growth. This piece responds to the resiliency of nature, while providing a vessel for the thyme seeds to grow, the plant and the human-made materials are lodged in an interdependent relationship.
Council of Climate Relations Council of Climate Relations, 2024 Included a Epipremnum aureum (also known as Marble Queen Pothos) is an installation where viewers are encouraged to sit on the stools and be a part of a conversation with the plant to determine at harmonious future between nature and humans. Viewers are encouraged to listen within the quiet space with the plant as it is situated on a bench sharing a story. Inspired by the TED talks platform and the concept of 'Ideas change everything'.
