Kaylee Ross

VCD – Character Design & Illustration
kayleerossart.comKaylee is an illustrator who grew up in Calgary, AB and creates detail-oriented illustrations and prints focused on the interactions and play between natural and human forms. She draws on her childhood aspirations for her art dreaming of the possibilities of what she could create, now as an adult being able to fully illustrate those interests. She is inspired by representations of animal and natural imagery and the implications they hold to each individual person, as everyone experiences the natural world through their own personal lens of lived experiences. She uses both traditional and digital mediums, finding intimacy in the act of silkscreen printing as well as illustrating digitally. The acts of repetition through detailed, flowing linework and screen-printing many layers for editions makes her art feel like a piece of her and she wants to share these pieces to others in hopes they find a space within her works to fall into.
Damehood
"Damehood" is a representation of my experience at Alberta University of the Arts and how the experiences and connections formed these past years shaped me into the person I am now. My friends and loved ones have surrounded and supported me to become stronger not only as a person but as an artist, making me capable of taking on anything that may come my way. They have made me feel confident in creating what I truly want to create, to not feel ashamed for wanting to draw women in armour, or detailed swords, which is now inherent in my practice. Moving forward, these people and memories will become some of my most cherished moments for the rest of my life and I thank them for pushing me to become the best possible version of myself.
