Climate change, environmentalism, sustainability and pollution are the most important global issues of our time. Currently the global conversation is driven by environmental disasters like the 2019 forest fires in the Amazon Rainforest and the bushfires in Australia. It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the negative and devastating consequences of capitalism, resource extraction, and consumerism on global ecology. Using different mediums, my artistic practice addresses these serious issues, and it is my hope that my art will drive dialogue, greater awareness, and political action.
Recent environmental disasters like the 2019 forest fires in the Amazon Rainforest and Australia continue to draw attention to global warming and its negative consequences for the environment. This figure evokes elements of fire from the use of wood, charcoal and ash. The overall theme is deliberately apocalyptic, the figure isolated and alone.
I created several acrylic paintings featuring pieces of garbage among natural landscapes which I photographed myself. The images are meant to be a microcosm of a much larger environmental issue of pollution in urban centers. They are a stark reminder of human carelessness and indifference, ubiquitous images we see and ignore every single day.
